How to setup the UniFi captive portal for your guests

Want to offer your guests hassle-free WiFi? Consider deploying a UniFi Captive Portal. Instead of just creating another SSID with a basic password, remember to lock down your main network. The UniFi Guest Portal can keep guest users separate and restrict their access to a few hours.

Configuring the captive portal via the UniFi Control is a breeze. Activate guest isolation to block guest access to your internal network—no VLANs required. Plus, you can use the portal to market your products or services.

Create a guest WiFi SSID

If you don’t have one already you will need to create an SSID for guests. You can do this by adding new a new WiFi network as per below:

  1. Go to Settings > WiFi
  2. Create New
  3. Give the SSID a name, that will be recognisable as a guest WiFi service
  4. Leave password blank to encourage users to join
  5. Select Manual in advanced section
  6. Check Hotspot Portal
  7. Security Protocol should be set to open
  8. Select Add WiFi Network

Configuring the UniFi captive portal

Once the guest SSID is set up correctly, the next step is to configure the UniFi captive portal, as per the instructions below:

  1. Go to Hotspot manager
  2. Select Landing Page tab
  3. If prompted, enable landing page
  4. Got to authentication tab on right hand side
  5. In One Way Methods section, select external portal server
  6. Enter IP address of server and save
  7. Go to Settings tab
  8. Check Show Landing Page
  9. Check domain and enter hostname of the redirect url
  10. Adjust any pre or post authorization exceptions
  11. Save

The above instructions are for configuring the external portal server as the UniFi Captive Portal. To use other authentication adjust in the authentication tab.

Advanced UniFi captive portal healthchecks

The UniFi Guest Portal service works really well as an away to capture guest email and more for busy customer facing venues. However like any business critical service, you need to run regular health checks and status updates so that the WiFi users have a perfect experience every time. That is why we developed our advanced UniFi Guest Portal health check system, so that we can be sure that your integration is set up correctly

List of Health Check Tests

The UniFi Guest Portal uses the UniFi API which uses the url string for authentication. We need to verify that the site id embedded in the url is unique and not a duplicate or the UniFi “default” ID

Verification that an SSID with guest policy exists and that it is accessiable even if in a WLAN group

The site ports check is a test to make sure that the ports on the local router/gateway are open as required. Sometimes port restrictions are in place locally and this can block some of the required routes that the UniFi Guest Portal requires

Verify the existence of VLANs on the guest network. Ordinarily a VLAN will not cause any issue with the UniFi Guest Portal but it does warrant some extra tests to make sure the connection is working correctly

The UniFi guest portal requires an open connection to the UniFi controller at all times. This test is to verify that the API logon credentials are working as required

The controller needs to be accessible via a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) and this is a test to confirm that this is indeed in place.

This is a test to make sure that none of the port access required by the UniFi Guest Portal API have restrictions in place. This test is specifically for the ports on machine hosting the UniFi controller . If certain ports are restricted then you can see issues like delays on the guest portal authentication.

The UniFi controller public domain needs to have an active SSL cert for a smooth WiFi user experience. This test verifies the presence or lack thereof of a valid SSL cert

UniFi controller online means that the controller is publicly accessible via any browser. The reason for this is that UniFi use their API to send commands to and from the controller, therefore the controller must always be available. The best way to achieve this is UniFi cloud hosting, however an on premise server or cloud key exposed to a public url will work just as well.
